Vector tracing animu images is a lot of fun to me, although time consuming and at times tedious. I've only done a few in all over the past few years and I'm sure there are still things for me to learn, but for now i'm satisfied with my skill I think.
Anyway this was also right after coming off a Gurren Lagann binge and I actually saw a request on fourchon for the original (a magazine scan) to be traced. I took the challenge because I sort of missed doing this.
There is no background because I couldn't decide what to do with it. The original is too detailed/abstract (if that makes sense) to mess with and I could never figure out on a good method of replacing it (such as a color or pattern).
Open the image in photoshop, and using the Pen Tool, trace out all of the lines of the image. Then, what I do, is basically create a layer for every color and piece of the image. The dark red of her hair and the light red of her hair (where the light is) are two individual layers, for example. All of the layers go under the outline layer. You should be able to find some tutorials for this kind of thing with google.
this is pretty neat, however in the future I'd be more careful about broken and spilled lines, and learning to taper lines is a good skill which doesn't seem to make a lot of difference but comparing it to an untapered work you can see a huge difference in quality and crispness.
tracing or not, it's good to see you're still drawing and I look forward to original works in the future.
